Lincoln Ladies won 4-0 at Sheffield Wednesday in their final game of the season in the Women's Premier League Northern Division on Sunday.
Jodie Michalska scored a hat-trick to take her tally to 32 for the season, with Sophie Wallis also on target.
Lady Imps chairman Geoff Adams told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "I don't think we were ever in danger of losing but they were a difficult side to break down."
Promotion rivals Sunderland are 12 points behind with five games to play.
But having seen Lincoln extend their lead at the top of the table following Sunderland's 3-1 defeat by Leicester, Adams said: "The result puts us in a strong position.
"We have points on the board. Sunderland have five games left but they can only afford one draw and that will be tough for them.
"Their whole run-in is difficult. It's out of our hands and there's nothing we can do, but I hope we can go up to the National Division as we are the best team in this league."
Sunderland's next match is at home to Newcastle on Thursday.
