Emily Heckler's hat-trick guided Doncaster to a 5-2 away win over Liverpool to push the Belles to within three points of third-placed Everton.
Fifth-placed Bristol Academy stayed level on points with the Belles after a 4-2 win against Fulham.
Birmingham City and Blackburn Rovers also moved up the table, City beating Watford 3-2 and Rovers winning 4-3 at Fulham.
Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea did not play due to international call-ups.
Liverpool 2-5 Doncaster Rovers Belles
Heckler and Rachel Williams each scored in the first 10 minutes for Belles, but Cheryl Foster reduced the arrears with a 16th-minute penalty.
Heckler quickly restored the visitors' advantage, only for Foster to pull a second goal back before the interval.
Liz Hansen hit the Belles' fourth goal just after the break with Heckler completing her hat-trick soon after.
Bristol Academy 4-2 Nottingham Forest
Gwennan Harries, Kerry Bartlett, Shelley Cox and an own goal sent Bristol into a four-goal lead as Forest were put to the sword.
Natalie Clarke and Andi Bell hit a consolation goal apiece in the last 15 minutes, but Forest's sixth defeat in seven matches left them rooted to the bottom of the table.
Birmingham City 3-2 Watford
A superb stoppage-time winner by midfielder Sally Stanton gave Birmingham their third win of the season after a roller-coaster of a match.
Helen Lander equalised Katy Ward's opener for the home side, then after Amy McCann has put Blues back in front Mikaela Howell levelled the scores.
But there was no coming back a third time for Watford after Stanton had expertly guided in a 20 yard lob a minute into time added.
Fulham 3-4 Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn's Katie Anderton completed a hat-trick five minutes from time to win a hard-fought but entertaining contest.
The striker's first goal put Rovers two up in the 18th minute after Natalie Preston had bagged Blackburn's opener.
A 24th minute Katie McIntire penalty brought Fulham back into the game, but the visitors regained the lead through Anderton's second goal just after the break.
Fulham drew level, however, Alicia Moran following Jess Trimnell's 55th-minute strike with a 79th-minute equaliser.
The home side's efforts deserved a point, but instead Rovers took all three following Anderton's third.
