Foyle was previously manager at Port Vale between 2004-7
York City boss Martin Foyle celebrated his first year at the helm by seeing his side move third in the Blue Square Premier with a 1-0 win over Gateshead.
Since taking over from Colin Walker he has overseen an FA Trophy final appearance and league survival.
He told BBC Radio York: "It has been hard and I won't hide from the fact the job was a lot bigger than I thought.
"But we've got fantastic bonding in and around the place and I think that could take you places."
He added: "It's surprising when you all muck in together - good team spirit and we've got a good board.
"The McGills (the club's owners) have been absolutely fantastic to us and hopefully we've rewarded it a little bit.
"But it all goes down to everybody. It's not certain individuals or me or the coaching staff."
As well as a good run in the league so far this season York are also having a run in the FA Cup, and play Cambridge United in the second round.
Foyle says after a tough season last year it has been the players that have been the difference this season.
"It's nothing else," he said. "We haven't done anything different.
"We've worked on certain things but at the end of the day a manager is only as good as his players."
