Alex Lawless scored the only goal as York beat Gateshead to make it four Blue Square Premier wins in a row.
Lawless put the hosts in front midway through the first half, shooting low into the net after Michael Gash's headed assist.
Gash almost doubled the lead, but his effort was blocked by Kris Gate.
The visitors should have equalised in the second half as Chris Swailes saw his header blocked and then volleyed the rebound over the bar.
