Yeovil midfielder Darren Way has conceded he may never play football again after suffering serious injuries in a car crash in December.
Way, 29, was wheelchair-bound after the accident but is now walking again.
"Whatever happens, it is disappointing to have your career taken away through no fault of your own at the age of 29," he told the Western Morning News.
"That really hurts, but whatever happens I have to move on with my life and stay strong."
Way, who started his career at Norwich, has played 259 games for the Glovers in two spells with the club.
He first moved to Huish Park in 2000 and played a key part in helping the club win promotion to the Football League in 2003.
After six years in Somerset he joined Swansea before returning to Yeovil in November 2007, initially on loan.
Way has worked in boss Terry Skiverton's backroom team as a scout since his injury and made an emotional appearance at the manager's testimonial match on Saturday when he came on as a substitute in the final minute and received a standing ovation.
He said: "If that was the last time I entered a playing field, then that was good enough for me.
"It was quite emotional, but no-one could have written the script better.
"To think of where I have come from, an electric wheelchair to walking on the pitch in the space of seven months - it has taken a lot of hard work and good attitude to get me there."
