Saunders demands Wrexham success

By David Dulin

Dean Saunders may have had a good start to his managerial career when he took charge at Wrexham last October, but the dramatic tail off at the end of the season left him with a lot to think about.

Promotion for the Dragons must be the sole target this season as they start their second season outside the Football League, but they face a tougher looking Blue Square Premier.

"There are a few clubs with a bigger budget than us, but I'm confident we can give anyone a game," said Saunders.

"I think we have got to knuckle down and get off to a decent start.

"We are going have some ups and downs. We can't win every game. I think Burton went up last year losing eight or nine games.

"It's going to be a difficult season, but I'm here to get the club out of the league.

"I'm not interested in finishing halfway up the league and treading water. I want some success for the club, for the fans and for myself."

Saunders has worked hard clearing out a lot of players and trying to replace them with quality, while having a settled squad will certainly help.

At the same time, he is trying to inject a fighting spirit into his Wrexham team.

"You learn something new every day in football," he added. "I like to think that in the future I will be managing higher up.

"I've had a lot of experience. I've had three years at Blackburn, two years at Newcastle and I've been working under Tosh [Wales boss John Toshack] for two years.

"I try to put it all together and impose it on the players. Hopefully they take it all on board and go out there and fight and I think that's all the Wrexham fans want to see.

"They want to see a Wrexham team having a go, fighting to try to get out of this league and if we get out of this league I think we will get out the next league."
