Di Matteo to be patient with Cox

West Bromwich Albion manager Roberto Di Matteo is prepared to be patient with young striker Simon Cox as he adjusts to life in the Championship.

The 22-year-old made his first league start for Albion in the 3-1 win over Plymouth at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Di Matteo told BBC WM: "We need to be patient with him. It's a big jump from League One to the Championship.

"It's just a question of time before he starts scoring. Once he gets one under his belt, that will be the start."

After scoring 29 league goals for Swindon in 2008-09, Cox was sought after by several clubs during the summer, with the Baggies eventually completing a £1.5m deal for him in July.

His only goal for the club so far came in the second round of the Carling Cup, when his late winner helped Albion to a 4-3 win over League Two side Rotherham United.

Cox could soon be joined at the club by Chilean international defender Gonzalo Jara, after Di Matteo revealed to BBC WM that the paperwork needed to seal his £1.4m transfer from Colo Colo is almost complete.

"It should have arrived now so we're just waiting for him to come over to England," added Di Matteo.

"It's been a busy time for him in the last two weeks. He's played two international games, including against Brazil on Wednesday, so he should be quite fit when he gets here."

West Brom, who have taken 14 points from their first six league games, will return to the top of the Championship table if they beat Doncaster at The Hawthorns on Tuesday.
