The deal saw Baggies smash their transfer record for the second time in a single day, following their 2.25m move for Tranmere's Jason Koumas. Hughes has signed a four-year contract which will keep him at the Hawthorns until the summer of 2006. Hughes and Koumas both go into the Albion squad for Saturday's home encounter with Fulham. The deal concludes a long drawn-out chase for Hughes, who had baulked on a return to The Hawthorns because of wages.
The former Kidderminster Harriers player enjoyed a prolific first spell with West Brom, Hughes' boyhood heroes. But he can now expect a hero's welcome of his own when he runs out against Fulham on Saturday. West Brom's previous transfer record of 2.1m paid to Bristol Rovers for striker Jason Roberts. An Albion spokesman said: "We can confirm Lee Hughes has signed for West Bromwich Albion for 2.5m on a four-year contract after agreeing terms." |
