Walsall's Alex Nicholls rues 'pathetic' season

Walsall forward Alex Nicholls admits he has had a "pathetic" season as he struggles for a first-team place.

The 22-year-old has found his chances limited by the arrival of veterans Darren Byfield and Steve Jones.

"It's been a tough season - I started 40 games last season, I think I've started 11 this season," Nicholls told BBC WM.

"So if you look at it it's pretty pathetic from my point of view compared to last year."

Nicholls has started the last five Saddlers games, initially in his preferred role up front, latterly being moved to the right side of midfield by boss Chris Hutchings. He acknowledges his performances have been mixed.

"I thought I was doing OK when I was playing up front, then he's put me on the right," he noted.

"I had the one good game against Bristol Rovers, then the two results we've had since then have been poor - we haven't played well collectively or individually.

"I'm champing at the bit, I want to play every game now, from now until the end of the season."

Nicholls may face further competition for a starting role this weekend, with former Northern Ireland winger Jones fit to return after a lengthy absence.
