Palmer hopes for new Walsall deal

Chris Palmer
Palmer's contract with Walsall expires at the start of January

Walsall full-back Chris Palmer is still waiting to learn if he will be given a new contract at the Banks's Stadium.

The 25-year old has been a first-team regular since signing from Wycombe in August but his current deal expires at the start of January.

"I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully things will sort themselves out," Palmer told BBC WM.

"I've got an agent who looks after me so he's the one who will be talking to the club."

Palmer has made 22 appearances and scored one goal for the Saddlers this season, and he acknowledges his spell with the League One side has changed his opinion on which is his best position.

"I would have said before that it was on the wing, but obviously all season I've been playing left back or right back," he explained.

We've just got to build up our consistency and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be pushing for the play-offs

"So at the moment I'm enjoying playing full-back, which is fine, and I'm taking all the set-pieces as well."

The Derby-born player has previously had something of a stop-start career - starting with his hometown club, then at Notts County and Wycombe - but now he is determined to play a full part in Walsall's bid to make the play-offs.

"Consistency within the team has been something we've struggled with, but as an individual all I can do is work as hard as I can and do as well as I can in my performances," he added.

Palmer is also aware that the Saddlers' season could turn either way. The club are currently eight points below the play-off places, and eight points above the drop-zone.

"Yeah you always have to be looking over your shoulder and watching people catching you up from the bottom," Palmer stated.

"At the end of the day we've just got to build up our consistency and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be pushing for the play-offs."
