Palmer has caught Jimmy Mullen's eye in pre-season
Walsall have strengthened their defensive options by signing versatile full-back Chris Palmer.
The 24-year-old can play on either flank and has caught the eye on trial at the Banks's Stadium after being released by Wycombe Wanderers.
"Chris came in and was determined to prove what he is capable of," said Walsall boss Jimmy Mullen.
"He's a good footballer with two good feet and has the ability to play in a number of different positions."
Palmer started his career with home-town club Derby County but failed to break into the first team.
Since then he has played on loan at Hereford before signing for Notts County and moving on to Wycombe.
Last season was a disappointing one for the defender, making just one appearance for the Chairboys and having a brief spell on loan at Darlington.
Walsall were in need of cover for the full-back positions with left-sided Paul Boertien just returning from injury and right-back Rhys Weston set to miss the start of the season with a groin problem.
Further reinforcements are expected before the Saddlers open their League One campaign at Yeovil, with several trialists still trying to make a case, including the former Everton and Plymouth striker Nick Chadwick.
