A young Walsall fan stepped into the breach when an assistant referee fell ill during the Saddlers' 4-0 friendly win at Worcester City.
Alex Hartshorne offered to deputise for the official when he was forced from the field in the first half.
"I was sitting with my mum and she dared me to do it, thinking that I wouldn't," the 20-year old told BBC WM.
"I thought I'd go in and prove her wrong and go and enjoy myself really. I'd like to think I was all right."
Hartshorne, who lives in Stonnall, ended up running the line for just over 20 minutes after a pep talk from the referee.
"He just said go out, enjoy yourself, and if you make any mistakes don't worry about it," he said.
Trialist Patrick Suffo scored twice for the Saddlers with Dwayne Mattis and another trialist Georges Ba also on target.
