Tranmere Rovers chairman Lorraine Rogers has announced that this season will be her last in her current position at the League One club.
She told BBC Radio Merseyside that she she has become 'disillusioned' with the direction the game is moving in.
"What I've seen over the last couple of years is that it's becoming progressively harder for the smaller clubs to survive," she said.
"I hate saying this, but I've just become disillusioned with the game."
Rogers, who has been in football for the past 10 years, says it has been a hard decision to make.
Below the Championship, there are so many clubs struggling

But one of the things that disappoints her is the increasing gap between the wealth of the Premier League clubs and those in the lower leagues.
"I can see at Premier League level we have the most fabulous product," she said. "But, below Premier League level, particularly below the Championship, there are so many clubs struggling.
"A lot of the discussions are about financial survival. That's the sort of discussions we are having in the boardrooms with our opposite numbers.
"It's not about the players and the game."
Although Rogers will be stepping down at the end of the season, she says there is no rigid time-line in place. But she admits when she sells her stake in the club, it must be to the right person.
"With regard to the shareholding, I just want to take the right approach in making sure it ends in responsible hands," she said. "But what does that mean 'responsible hands'?
"Well you'd just like to feel that it's selling it to people who care about the club and ideally put some money into the club.
