Chris Hargreaves scored the first goal in the play-off final win at Wembley

Torquay United captain Chris Hargreaves has opted to stay on at Plainmoor by signing a new one-year contract.

Hargreaves, 37, who is also to assist with training, will be back in League football for the first time since going down with Oxford United in May 2006.

Hargreaves scored five times as the Gulls won promotion via the play-offs.

But the key goals were his vital equaliser against Burton Albion on the season's final day - and the opener against Cambridge United at Wembley.

Cleethorpes-born Hargreaves started his career with home-town club Grimsby.

He has since clocked up 657 appearances in his 10-club career with Scarborough, Hull City, West Bromwich Albion, Hereford United, Plymouth Argyle, Northampton Town, Brentford, Oxford and the last two years at Torquay.

In a statement on the Torquay club website, Hargreaves said: "I'm delighted to have signed a new contract. There was only one club I wanted to sign for and it was just a matter of when."
