Swindon Town keeper Phil Smith is hoping to hold down his first-team place after being given a chance by manager Danny Wilson.
Smith, 30, has been in the side for the last two matches after first choice stopper David Lucas was dropped following the 3-3 draw at Yeovil.
"I would assume that if I play well I would have a chance of staying in," Smith told BBC Wiltshire.
"It's an opportunity I've always wanted so I've just got to take hold of it."
Smith continued: "Considering the lack of games I've had over the last few years any game I get I'm going to enjoy.
"I wasn't expecting to play every week but I've got a chance to play a couple of games and let's see what happens."
He was selected for the 3-0 home defeat by Charlton last Tuesday but enjoyed a better afternoon between the sticks on Saturday.
Swindon beat Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup with a 4-0 victory at Home Park to take them into the second round.
Next up in the competition for the Robins is a trip to Blue Square Bet Premier side Crawley Town, the club Smith left in 2006 to join Swindon.
"A few years ago they were struggling financially so they've had their ups and downs, " he said.
"But they're really flourishing at the moment with a bit of money behind them.
"They're top of the Conference which isn't easy so they'll be a tough game.
"As non-league grounds go it's quite smart and fairly new.
"It's not a horror show and the changing rooms are spacious so there won't be any prima dona crying or anything."
Although Crawley will enjoy the underdog tag, the former Millwall keeper does not think they will have overwhelming support.
"There will probably be quite a few people in non-league that will be backing us," he said.
"Everyone begrudges a team that's got plenty of money all of a sudden."
