Billy Paynter predicts future success for Swindon Town

Departing top scorer Billy Paynter is confident his former Swindon team-mates can emulate last season's success.

The striker scored 29 goals for Town as they reached the League One play-offs but has now joined Leeds after turning down a new deal at the County Ground.

He told BBC Wiltshire: "With a great manager in Danny Wilson this team can progress and I hope it does.

"I've really enjoyed my time here, two-and-a-half good years. Danny Wilson has given me the belief."

Swindon lost 1-0 to Millwall in the play-off final at Wembley and Paynter admitted that had they won it could have seen him remain in Wiltshire rather then move to promoted Leeds.

"Possibly it could have happened," he said. "The main attraction is Championship football and that's what I want to be playing.

"All season could be remembered because people were writing us off before the season had started.

"I've only really enjoyed two clubs, Port Vale and now Swindon."

Between them Paynter and Charlie Austin netted 49 times last term and the Elland Road-bound forward predicts a bright future for the former non-league star.

"From where's he come to what he's achieved, it's a great story," added Paynter.

"It shows the character of the lad, he's a great player. He's still learning, he's still only young."
