Byrne wants Swindon manager job

Swindon Town caretaker boss Dave Byrne has said he wants the permanent manager's job at the County Ground.

Assistant boss Byrne, who was caretaker before Maurice Malpas' appointment, is in temporary charge again following the Scot's departure on Friday.

He told BBC Radio Swindon: "I've got the train set at the moment. I have to make sure that the train set starts to move and I don't derail it.

"And if it keeps moving in the right direction maybe I've got a chance."

Byrne said he had been asked whether he wanted to become Robins boss last year but did not feel he was ready to take on the role.

"Ask me the same set of questions this year and you will get a totally different set of answers," he said.

Town chairman Andrew Fitton has said he expects to interview potential candidates for the position this week.
