Malpas closes in on more new men

Swindon Town manager Maurice Malpas is hoping to finally sign a couple of new players in the next seven days.

The club are negotiating a fee with Wolves for left-back Charlie Mulgrew.

They are also expecting an answer from ex-Manchester United reserve midfielder Ritchie Jones. And Malpas reckons that time is now of the essence.

"It's getting to the stage now where we're looking to either get them signed or we move onto somebody else," he told BBC Radio Swindon.

"We're going away to Austria next week and it's important that I can get players in to go there."

Having already brought in one new full-back, Swansea City's Kevin Amankwaah on a free transfer, Malpas is now believed to have made a six-figure offer for Scotland Under-21 international Mulgrew, who is also being chased by Southend.

"We put our offer in and Wolves came back with a counter offer," he said. "In terms of valuations I don't think there's that much between us.

"But it's just a case of how it's achieved. I'm hoping for an answer by the end of the week."

Meanwhile, Malpas wants a quick decision from Jones, 21, who has played on loan at Colchester, Barnsley and Yeovil.

"I'm expecting his agent to tell me in the next couple of days whether it's a yes or a no," said Malpas. "Ritchie has really just got to decide where he wants to go.

"I'm told there are another couple of clubs interested in him.

I haven't made my mind up on what I will take to the table for Josh Low, so I'm probably delaying that one more than he is

"I don't think it's about money. I think it's really to do with whether he wants to move from the area he lives in now, that's the impression that I get."

Malpas also revealed that experienced Peterborough United winger Josh Low is another player on his radar.

"I was keen for him to come on loan for a six-month spell," said Malpas. "But he's got family and he's looking for a more permanent deal.

"It's what I can take to the table for him. And is it good enough for him?

"At the moment I haven't made my mind up on what I will take to the table for him so I'm probably delaying that one more than he is."

Low is also thought to be interesting League One rivals Cheltenham.
