The BBC understands Swindon are to bid for Wolves defender Charlie Mulgrew.
The full-back played for Town manager Maurice Malpas in the Scotland Under-21 team last year and is also being chased by League One rivals Southend.
Swindon will not confirm the name of their target, but Malpas told BBC Radio Swindon a bid for a Championship defender will be made this week.
"We feel this could be the right one and to get that player we have to come up with some kind of offer," he said.
"The chairman has never said no and now he's put a bit of pressure on me to come up with the right offer.
"The club have been very good in the discussions so far, they haven't blown me out of the water. They've asked us to come up with something concrete and we've now got to do that."
If we can get everything right with this one it's a good addition to the squad

Swindon are putting the final touches to their bid which is likely to be made by the end of the week.
Malpas had previously said the club would not be paying any transfer fees this summer, but changed his mind when his target became available.
"It's a position I think we need filled," added Malpas. "If it doesn't go down we'll just move on to the next target.
"But we just think if we can get everything right with this one it's a good addition to the squad. He can play more than one position and he'll help the team."
Mulgrew started his career at Celtic and spent the second half of last season on loan at Southend, helping them reach the League One play offs.
