Sunderland's Kieran Richardson seeks response to defeat
Kieran Richardson scored the winning goal in a 2-1 home victory the last time Sunderland beat Newcastle United at the Stadium of Light in October 2008
Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson is looking to bounce back in Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby following their shock FA Cup exit at home to Notts County.
The Wearsiders rallied well after the 5-1 derby defeat against Newcastle in October with a four-match unbeaten run and are again looking for a response.
"We responded well after the Newcastle defeat," points out Richardson. "We beat Chelsea and drew with Tottenham.
"So hopefully next week we'll be happy," he told BBC Newcastle.
Sunderland have only lost consecutive games once this season, when they followed the 2-0 Boxing Day defeat to Manchester United with another reverse by the same scoreline at home to Blackpool two days later.
And Richardson knows that his side will need no extra motivation this weekend.
"We've got a massive game," he said. "And we need to get our heads down and train well.
"This defeat should not be the motivation, because it's a big game.
"And everyone should be motivated anyway from that 5-1 defeat.
"The lads will remember how bad it was. Words can't express the way I felt after that game.
"Those lads who haven't played in that derby before should now know how much it means to the Sunderland fans."
Sunday's game (1200 GMT) will be the first derby at the Stadium of Light since October 2008, when Richardson hit Sunderland's winner in a 2-1 victory - the Wearsiders' only win in the last 12 derby meetings.
That is one of only eight goals in 105 appearances since his £5.5m move from Manchester United in July 2007.
