Newcastle's Cheik Tiote loses appeal against red card
Tiote has also been booked eight times since his move last summer
The Football Association has rejected Newcastle midfielder Cheik Tiote's appeal against his dismissal in the 3-1 FA Cup third-round defeat at Stevenage.
He was shown a straight red card by referee Andre Marriner for a tackle on Jon Ashton in the 71st minute.
Tiote, 24, is to miss games against Sunderland, Tottenham and Fulham.
"At a regulatory commission hearing, a claim for wrongful dismissal from Newcastle United midfielder Cheik Tiote was rejected," a FA statement read.
"As a result, Tiote's three-match suspension will remain in place."
Speaking after Saturday's loss, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew stood up for the Ivory Coast international.
"The referee got it wrong. He [Tiote] was fast. He travelled across the ground. He was aggressive in the challenge but in no way was he intending to hurt the player.
"The ball was going away from the player. I was astonished by that."
Tiote has impressed since arriving at St James' Park from FC Twente in August, despite picking up eight yellow cards prior to the trip to Broadhall Way.
