Captain Lorik Cana demands Sunderland cup response
Cana was a summer signing from French Ligue 1 side Marseille
Sunderland captain Lorik Cana has called on his team-mates to respond to the 7-2 defeat by Chelsea in Saturday's club's FA Cup tie at Portsmouth.
The defeat was Sunderland's fifth in eight league games and Cana sees the trip to Fratton Park as an ideal chance to restore confidence within the squad.
"We must have a reaction in our next game," he told BBC Newcastle.
"Our first 50 minutes were really bad, it was too easy for Chelsea today and we have to change that for next week."
Defeat of Barrow in round three of the FA Cup on 2 January remains Sunderland's only win since late November's 1-0 success against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light.
And Cana is hopeful that the knockout pressure of the cup competition will be an incentive to his players in what is a tricky all-Premier League tie.
"We have to pick up some points and try to win the games, but the cup is completely different, you cannot lose or you are out," he said.
"It's away against a Premier League team so it'll be difficult but we have a week to prepare for this game."
Cana was signed from French Ligue 1 side Marseille in July 2009 on a four-year deal and has made 22 appearances since moving to the Stadium of Light.
