Sunderland defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Youth Cup semi-final second leg at Eastlands on Tuesday but go out of the competition 2-1 on aggregate. Midfielder Jordan Henderson's goal was not enough to cancel out the first-leg deficit but ensured the Black Cats emerged with pride intact.
Striker Ryan Noble almost levelled the tie when he scored on 88 minutes but the goal was ruled out for offside.
City will now play Chelsea or Aston Villa in the final.
A brace from Irish full-back Ryan McGivern was enough to settle the first game at the Stadium of Light which ended 2-0.
