Sunderland's remarkable FA Youth Cup run continued as they put out holders Liverpool with Wednesday night's 5-3 extra-time win at the Stadium of Light.

Martyn Waghorn and Ryan Noble scored the all important goals in the added half hour as the Black Cats booked their place in the quarter finals.

Assistant academy manager Kevin Ball told BBC Radio Newcastle: "There's a great character the players have shown.

"The players need to be given a pat on the back for tonight."

South Shields-born striker Waghorn, 18, grabbed a brace on the night to take him to six goals in the FA Youth Cup this season.

That kept up his record of having scored in every round. But Waghorn was more concerned with the achievement of his team in beating Liverpool, who had not lost a Youth Cup tie in almost three years, having won the trophy in 2006 and 2007.

"It's good to beat the team who've won it two years running," said Waghorn. "And quite comprehensively too.

"Confidence is going well at the minute and we've got the belief and character in the team to do something."
