Simonsen ready for Potters role

Stoke goalkeeper Steve Simonsen says he is ready to play a full part in the Potters' first team if Thomas Sorensen is ruled out for an extended period.

Simonsen started in the 3-0 defeat at Blackburn on Saturday after Sorensen injured his finger in the warm-up.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "To get out there and play was a nice surprise, even if the result was poor.

"We'll know more about his injury later in the week but I'll be happy to play my part if he's not fit."

Sorensen will have an X-ray on Monday to discover the extent of the injury.

Should he be ruled out, Simonsen will once again deputise against Manchester United on Boxing Day after making just his second league start of the season at Ewood Park.

"It is strange to be told at quarter to three that you're playing," said Simonsen.

"You have to get mentally prepared to go out on the pitch rather than sit on the bench.

"Obviously the result was disappointing - we knew we didn't give it our best in the first half - but now we need to concentrate on Manchester United," he added.
