Stevenage Borough have signed midfielder Joel Byrom from Northwich for a fee of £15,000.

The 22-year-old former Blackburn trainee has been monitored closely by Stevenage manager Graham Westley for some time.

Westley told BBC Three Counties Radio "I think he will be a fantastic addition to the squad. He is a real playmaker in the middle of the park."

Byrom has been selected in the England C squad to face Belgium next week.

Chairman Phil Wallace added: "As a club we've long been admirers of Joel. Graham tried to sign him in January but he was injured and again before the loan window closed in March but we couldn't agree a fee.

"We've been trying for the past two weeks to make a deal happen and are pleased it's been completed."

Byrom becomes the third Stevenage signing of the close season, following the arrivals of Charlie Griffin and Yemi Odubade to the Blue Square Premier club.
