Southend United captain Adam Barrett and midfielder Alan McCormack have had their contracts cancelled.

The pair have left the club by mutual consent and both players are now available on free transfers.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Southend is now subject to a salary cap in League Two and both players were high wage earners."

It continued: "The club's management wishes them well in finding new employment on similar terms."

Barrett spent six years at Roots Hall, making 286 appearances for the club. The 30-year-old played in 41 matches for the Shrimpers last season, which saw the side relegated from League One.

McCormack, 26, had been with the side for three-and-a-half years and had made almost 150 appearances for the side.
