Southend United captain Adam Barrett has been placed on the transfer list after handing in a written request.

The 30-year-old played 41 matches as the Essex side were relegated from League One last season.

A club statement said: "The club understands [his] desire to play at a higher level and reluctantly agreed to allow the player to seek a new club."

It appears other players have asked to leave, with goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall also appearing on the PFA list.

The club statement added: "Southend United also confirmed that it will not stand in the way of any of its senior players, several of whom are still on Championship level salaries, who may also want to transfer to an alternative club if appropriate transfer fees can be agreed with any interested parties.

It is not correct for certain sections of the media to suggest that all of our players were still unpaid for May

"The decision to grant Barrett and other senior players transfer requests has to be balanced against the wage constraints that Southend United and all clubs will operate under in League Two, which is subject to a Football League salary cap."

The club are currently unable to register players under the terms of a transfer embargo imposed by the Football League after the PFA paid their players' wages for January.

But a club spokesman said: "It is not correct for certain sections of the media to suggest that all of our players were still unpaid for May.

"Ninety-five per cent of our players and staff have been paid for May with the remaining staff due to be paid in full in the near future."
