Tilson laments Blues inexperience

Steve Tilson
Tilson described Southend's run of injuries as 'incredible'

Southend boss Steve Tilson fears mounting injuries among their most experienced players could cost them.

The Shrimpers boss was only able to field four substitutes for Tuesday's 2-0 defeat to Leeds United.

The casualty list grew when striker James Walker pulled a hamstring, ruling him out for up to six weeks.

Tilson told BBC Essex: "When you're around that bottom eight, you need a bit of experience at times and we haven't got too many available."

The defeat at Elland Road extended the Blues run of games without a win in League One to six and leaves them six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tilson said he could barely believe the number of injuries his side had picked up this season.

"It's incredible, we're a young side and when you're in the position that we're in it's tough," he admitted.

"Don't get me wrong, I thought they did well [against Leeds], but it's tough to keep playing [young players] because we need a bit of know-how with the position we are in."
