Mulgrew played 20 games for the Shrimpers last season

Southend United manager Steve Tilson is desperate to sign a left-back after missing out on his first choice.

The Blues had been targeting a permanent move for Scottish Under-21 international Charlie Mulgrew.

The Wolves defender was on loan at Roots Hall last season but has turned down the chance to return and signed for Aberdeen in his homeland.

Tilson told BBC Essex: "It's a blow as he did well when he was here but a left-back is now the priority."
