Under-fire Shrewsbury manager gets players' backing

Shrewsbury midfielder Terry Dunfield says that under-fire manager Paul Simpson is not to blame for the club's under-achievement this season.

With two games left, Simpson's men have slid from genuine League Two promotion hopefuls to rank play-off outsiders.

But Dunfield said: "It's just been one of those seasons. I don't think you can blame the manager for that.

"His record speaks for itself at this level. The players need to look at themselves in the mirror."

Simpson has come under fire from fans following Town's run of just two wins in 10 games.

Ahead of this Saturday's final home game against Morecambe, Town need not only to win, but then win again at Port Vale next weekend, while hoping that eight other results go their way over the next week or so, just to make it into the play-offs.

Everybody will be giving their all for the manager on Saturday

But Dunfield insists: "The boys stick together and we look up to the manager. He is taking training. Everything's normal.

"We're just focusing on Morecambe. Everybody will be giving their all for the manager on Saturday."

After joining the club in March 2008, Simpson's first job was to ensure Town avoided relegation.

He then led them last season to the League Two play-off final at Wembley, where they were beaten 1-0 by Gillingham.
