Paul Simpson has angrily denounced a section of Shrewsbury fans for being over-abusive during Town's painful 2-0 defeat to Darlington.

"It's diabolical that sane human beings come in with that sort of mentality," he told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"We're all feeling frustrated, we all want to win, and fans should understand I don't go away and don't care.

"And I do feel let down by the players. They've got ability. and we try to do everything right for them."

The under-pressure Shrewsbury manager added: "It's easy as a footballer because you can hide behind the abuse a manager gets.

"If every single player can look at himself and think they have done all they possibly can, then perhaps they're not being honest with themselves."

Shrewsbury were booed off after the Darlington loss, their fourth successive defeat without scoring a goal, left Town's promotion hopes hanging by a thread, five points outside the play-offs.

"We take it on the chin, we go again," said Simpson. "When you don't win matches, it hurts, and I know we can lift the players."
