Benson was Dagenham and Redbridge's leading scorer last season

Shrewsbury Town have missed out on signing Dagenham and Redbridge striker Paul Benson for a six-figure fee.

The 29-year-old had been in talks with Shrews boss Paul Simpson but opted to stay close to his London home.

Simpson told the club website: "His decision is because he doesn't want to leave the London area for family reasons and we have to accept that.

"We have a number of players in mind that we are interested in and we now move on and see if they're interested."

"I am still optimistic that we will have players in place by the start of the season who will help us."

Town are looking for a new striker after Grant Holt's switch to Norwich.
