Shrews plan nostalgia celebration

Shrewsbury Town

Fans of Shrewsbury Town have announced plans to bring two sets of promotion-winning players back to the club.

It is 30 years since Town won promotion to the second tier of English football, and 50 years since their first-ever rise - from the old Fourth Division.

"Promotion in 1979 to what's now the Championship was a great feat," said co-organiser Chris Smith.

"Beating Exeter to clinch it in front of 14,000 fans has stayed in the memory of all those who witnessed it."

Player-manager Graham Turner, now in charge at Hereford, made the club famous with some stirring FA Cup exploits en-route to winning a place in the Second Division.

In 1959, Shrewsbury had been placed in the Fourth Division after the merger of the Third Divisions North and South, and won promotion at the first attempt.

To do so they had to win at promotion rivals Watford - twice. The first game was abandoned with the Shrews in front when the Vicarage Road floodlights mysteriously failed.

Roger Groves, the chairman of shrewsTRUST, added: "The Trust have wanted to do a follow-up event ever since the Heroes and Legends evening held to mark the last ever game at Gay Meadow."

Players and officials will be attending the celebration night, at the Prostar Stadium on 17 May, with the full guest-list to be revealed in due course.
