Shrewsbury full-back Neil Ashton has credited manager Paul Simpson for reviving his Prostar Stadium career.
The 23-year-old had the opportunity to join Macclesfield after spending time on loan at Moss Rose last season.
But Ashton told BBC Radio Shropshire: "At the end of last season the gaffer was positive about bringing me back.
"There was a possible deal in the pipeline at Macclesfield, but once he said he wanted me back the only place I wanted to be was Shrewsbury."
Ashton is the club's second-longest serving player behind Kelvin Langmead.
He has started the Shrews' last four games, in which time the Shropshire side have been unbeaten and have climbed to second in League Two.
"Hopefully I've done enough to keep my place," he added.
