Tierney is out of contract with Shrewsbury in July 2009
Shrewsbury boss Paul Simpson says he did not want full-back Marc Tierney to move to Colchester.
"We made it clear we wanted Marc to stay and Marc made it clear he wasn't desperate to move," Simpson told the club website.
"But when you have a player out of contract in July and it looks like you won't be able to agree terms, you have to look at what's best for the club."
Tierney has signed on a month's loan, with a view to a possible longer deal.
Tierney, who has played 90 games for the Shrews, joined from Oldham in January 2007 and quickly established himself as a fans' favourite for his commitment. Last season he swept the board in the Player of the Year awards.
"Marc has been excellent, and all I can do is thank him for all he has done for us and wish him the best for the future," added Simpson.
