Sheffield United midfielder Lee Williamson has been ruled out for at least two months with a back injury.
The 27-year-old, who joined from Watford this summer, has yet to put in an appearance for the Blades and will now require surgery.
Manager Kevin Blackwell told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's a big blow to lose him but this has flared up out of nowhere.
"It means I will now have to try and get someone else in. I need that bit more quality in midfield."
Meanwhile a hearing into goalkeeper Paddy Kenny's failed drugs test will take place on 18 August.
Kenny tested positive for the banned substance ephedrine following the club's play-off semi-final against Preston in May.
The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper is currently on a club suspension.
