Reading defender Matt Mills is cautiously optimistic about the Royals chances in the forthcoming season.
Mills, who captained the team in the latter stages of last season, says he is not looking too far ahead.
He told BBC Berkshire: "I've gone into seasons predicting where we'd finish and end up being a million miles away.
"The best thing to do is to concentrate on getting fit and staying fit and on the opening game of the season and getting three points."
Despite his note of caution, Mills says the Reading squad are shaping up well for a good season.
"When you can keep a squad of players together, coming off the back of a season where we've had good times and bad, can only keep us stronger for this season," he said.
"All the players have grown in experience.
"If we can get off to a good start this year, especially after the run-in we had last year when we would have finished third in the league on the last 20 games, we've shown we have the players and the ability to do well in this league."
