Rudd played for London Irish, Wasps, Northampton and Newcastle |
London Irish winger John Rudd has retired from professional rugby to take up a position working in the City. Rudd, 28, spent a season at the Exiles, having initially joined on a six-week contract in October 2009 as cover. The former Newcastle winger, nicknamed 'Rhino', went on to score two tries in his 20 appearances for the club. He said: "I have been very lucky to have spent the last 10 years playing professional rugby and have played for some excellent clubs during that time." He continued: "Playing for the England Saxons and the Heineken Cup and league winning season with Wasps were just a number of career highlights. "I will always be grateful to London Irish for the opportunities and enjoyment I experienced in my final season as a rugby player. I wish Toby and the squad every success in the future. "Although I feel I still had some good rugby years ahead of me, the time is now right for me to pursue an exciting new chapter in my life and I am fortunate to be finishing my career with no major injuries and a host of lifelong friends from the sport." Rudd had spent a month's trial at rugby league side Bradford Bulls last season, and previously enjoyed a spell at Northampton Saints.
