Lazio tracking Gers striker Boyd

Italian side Lazio are interested in signing Rangers striker Kris Boyd, BBC Scotland has learned.

The Ibrox club have indicated their willingness to sell the 25-year-old, who turned down the chance to join Birmingham City after a fee was agreed.

The team from Rome now have the Scottish Premier League's leading scorer on a list of potential targets.

However, it is understood Boyd's wage demands could prove to be the stumbling block yet again.

Birmingham had a 3.75m bid for the Rangers striker accepted last week, but talks stalled over personal terms and Blues boss Alex McLeish has admitted a compromise is unlikely.

He told BBC Sport: "I would think the matter is now finished. I think he thinks it's not the right time to leave Rangers."

Lazio are currently seventh in Serie A, three points ahead of city rivals Roma.

Manager Delio Rossi has Macedonian international Goran Pandev as his star striker, who is usually partnered by powerful target man Tommaso Rocchi, while talented Argentine forward Mauro Matas Zrate is on loan at the Stadio Olimpico.

Rossi's other forward options include Nigerian international Stephen Makinwa and promising Czech youngster Libor Kozak.

Boyd has scored 20 goals this season and netted 27 last term.

However, Ibrox manager Walter Smith often left him out of key matches last season, giving him a start in just two of the club's 19 European ties.

Former England star Paul Gascoigne spent three injury-interrupted seasons with Lazio before moving to Rangers in 1995.
