Sutton also played for Stafford Rangers and Northwich Victoria
Port Vale defender Ritchie Sutton has had his short-term contract extended until the end of the season.
After being given a six-month contract by Vale back in July, Sutton's deal was due to expire at the end of December.
But, after five first team game for the League Two leaders, he has done enough to be kept on by Vale boss Micky Adams.
And the 24-year-old, released by neighbours Crewe as a youngster, is delighted to have been given a second chance in the professional game.
"I'm over the moon," Sutton told BBC Radio Stoke. "I've worked really hard.
"Micky Adams is a big name in football and, when he sees something in you, you must be doing something right.
"I can take a lot of pride in that."
After his release by Crewe, Sutton went into non-league football with Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria and latterly Nantwich Town.
And, following his arrival at Vale Park in the summer, he suffered a frustrating start sat on the sidelines.
He was suspended for the first six games, a punishment carried over from last season when he was at Nantwich.
But, after working hard in training and shedding almost two stone in weight, Sutton has now made three starts.
And he has set his sights on forcing his way into a team with one of the best defensive records in the Football League, having shipped just nine goals in 19 games.
"We've got one of the best defences," said Sutton. "And it is so hard to break into the team but, even when I am on the bench, I'm learning a lot from Gareth Owen and John McCombe."
