Port Vale have offered a short-term contract to defender Ritchie Sutton, who will travel with the squad on their pre-season tour of Ireland.

Sutton, who has been training with the League Two side for almost three weeks, spent last season with Nantwich Town.

The 24-year-old will join another former Crewe trainee, midfielder Gary Roberts, on the trip to Ireland.

BBC Radio Stoke understands Roberts, 23, will agree a six-month contract with Vale on their return.

Micky Adams' side drew 1-1 with Newcastle Town in their final friendly match before they depart for Ireland.

John McCombe's deflected effort three minutes from time was enough to preserve Vale's unbeaten record during pre-season.

"They're a bit tired and the tiredness showed with them all today," Adams told BBC Radio Stoke. "I'm pleased to get a draw out of it."
