Port Vale trialist Gary Roberts in 'last-chance saloon'

Gary Roberts has admitted a trial with Port Vale could be his final opportunity with a Football League club after numerous off-the-field problems.

The former Crewe midfielder, 23, was sacked by Rotherham in April for a serious breach of club discipline.

"It's a last-chance saloon so I've got to do it for myself and for the manager [Micky Adams] who has given me the chance," Roberts told BBC Radio Stoke.

"I've learnt just not to be a plonker for all my life."

His spells with Crewe and Yeovil were littered with drink and gambling problems, but he is hopeful of a fresh start at Vale.

"I've got regrets but that's in the past now and I've got to look to the future," Roberts continued.

"Micky Adams has put his arm round me and said if he can get me right I'll be the player that I was. If I work for him, he'll work for me."

Roberts, who represented England at several youth levels, made his debut for Crewe at the age of 18 and played more than 100 league games for the Alex before being released in 2008.

He may play some part in Vale's pre-season campaign, which begins against Harborough Town on Saturday.
