Geoff Horsfield slams Port Vale "cowards" after defeat

Port Vale assistant manager Geoff Horsfield
Horsfield says changes will be made for the game with Lincoln on Tuesday

Geoff Horsfield has said some Port Vale players performed like "cowards" in their 2-0 defeat at home to Barnet.

"I thought we were very poor and I don't think it's too strong a word to say that some of us were cowards," the assistant manager told BBC Radio Stoke.

"A lot of the players will be wondering if they'll be playing on Tuesday [against Lincoln] because their performances just weren't good enough."

Barnet had lost their previous 10 away matches before their win at Vale Park.

Two goals from John O'Flynn condemned Micky Adams' side to their fifth home defeat of the campaign.

Vale, now 15th in League Two, had hoped to launch a late bid for the play-offs, but Horsfield believes the team may need to re-assess their aims this season.

"We, as a management team, aren't looking at the play-offs because we're taking each game as it comes," added the veteran striker.

"Because we've started doing well, the fans and media are not just expecting to draw games at home. The expectation is there but the players have got to come to the front of that and they haven't done that.

"There's a lot of work to do, but you can't give them that desire, they've got to have that inside themselves. I'm not saying they didn't try, but there wasn't enough desire."
