Port Vale's Gareth Owen was delighted to end a five-year wait for his first goal after heading home the third in his side's 4-0 win over Grimsby Town.

The 26-year-old defender last scored when he was playing for Oldham Athletic against Plymouth Argyle back in 2004.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "Even the referee tried to say it was an own-goal but it was me who got there first."

The win maintained Vale's unbeaten home record this season and has taken them up to 10th place in League Two.

Owen, who joined the Vale in January 2009, should get a chance to face his former club Stockport County next month after the draw for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy paired them at home to the League One side.

Vale boss Micky Adams told BBC Radio Stoke: "We are giving the home fans a real good feeling at the moment and long may that continue.

"A home draw is what you want in any cup competition and I will be treating it very seriously. It's the only way we will get a chance of playing at Wembley."
