Horsfield successfully battled testicular cancer in October 2008

Port Vale assistant manager Geoff Horsfield has told BBC Radio Stoke that he contracted swine flu just before his move to Vale Park in July.

"My fitness isn't what I would like to be because When I first spoke to Micky Adams about joining Vale, I ended up contracting swine flu," said Horsfield.

"I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. It was a horrible thing to have."

The 35-year-old successfully battled testicular cancer after being diagnosed with the problem in October 2008.

Horsfield is looking to resume his playing career with the League Two club, after a short spell with Lincoln at the end of the 2008-09 season.

Around 200,000 people in the UK have contracted swine flu, a number which is rising at a rapid rate.

Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards was the first high-profile footballer to suffer from the disease, which he picked up whilst on holiday in Cyprus.
