Thompson's two Vale goals came against Rochdale and Shrewsbury
Striker Steve Thompson admits he deserved to be dropped from Port Vale's starting line-up against Morecambe.
The 19-year-old was left out by manager Dean Glover after what he described as "a poor performance" in the previous game against Chester.
Thompson told BBC Radio Stoke: "I have been inconsistent, and as a young player it's easier for the manager to take you out of the team.
"I haven't produced the goods and I deserve what's happened to me."
Thompson endured a frustrating start to life at Vale Park following his free transfer from Middlesbrough at the beginning of the season.
He had to wait until 6 December for his first Vale appearance after a succession of injuries, and Thompson admitted that his failure to make an impact at first-team level had prayed on his mind.
"The first three or four months were a very frustrating time for me just waiting to get my chance," Thompson said.
I had a couple of poor performances at home and I found myself back at square one, which I can completely understand

"I finally got my chance and I scored against Rochdale and Shrewsbury, and I was on top of the world.
"But then I had a couple of poor performances at home and I found myself back at square one, which I can completely understand."
