Crewe Alexandra manager Gudjon Thordarson believes his side can avoid relegation from League One following Tuesday's 1-0 win over Southend United.

Having been in the relegation zone for most of the season, the Alex are now five points from safety with two games in hand.

Thordarson told BBC Radio Stoke: "All we can do is keep working, and if we do that I think we'll be fine."

"I have faith in the players, but they need to have faith in themselves.

A 34th minute goal from Billy Jones gave Crewe only their second away win over the season and handed them their fourth victory in seven league games.

"It feels good, it's nice to know we can win games away from home," said Thordarson.

"It was nice to see that the team can keep their shape and discipline and play the way we did tonight."
