Sturrock is keen to reduce the size of his squad

Plymouth Argyle manager Paul Sturrock has predicted that many Championship players will have to reduce their salaries next season.

Sturrock believes new signings will be forced to lower their demands because of the large number of lower-league players already released.

He said: "Wages will have to go down and hopefully that'll benefit clubs.

"The players who have been getting paid unbelievable wages are going to have to cut their cloth."

The Pilgrims boss acknowledged that bringing new signings to Home Park ahead of next season is reliant on reducing the size of his squad.

"The key to us is that we're going to have to move some players on. That's vitally important for anything that we're thinking about bringing in," he told BBC Radio Devon.

Sturrock said the process of determining which players are available for a move to the West Country had already begun.

He said: "I've had long conversations with five or six of the Premiership managers now, stated my case and they've been receptive to the chat we've had."

Sturrock bought in seven players on loan last season, several of whom were significant contributors to the Pilgrims survival.

"The reason that loans were successful was the time frame," added Sturrock.

"We didn't have to go charging out there and so we could watch them in reserve games before bringing them in."
