Ferguson takes his side to Bristol City on Saturday
Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson says the club have failed to bring in a loan target to bolster their defensive options.
Ferguson's backline have not kept a clean sheet in the Championship.
He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "For one reason or another we won't be able to get him again.
"I think he's got a slight problem with his contract at his club. So he's got to sort that out first. We're still on the look-out for players."
Director of football Barry Fry had earlier confirmed that the player was also a target in the summer.
Ferguson added: "Unless you get the absolute right one and the money's right it's difficult to improve the squad.
"When you're getting quotes of £10,000, £12,000, £15,000-a-week every time you make a phonecall it's something you can't compete with."
Ferguson is experiencing the toughest period of his managerial career so far with Posh bottom-but-one in the Championship after losing their last three league games.
Those results have drawn criticism from sections of the London Road support but the Peterborough manager insists it will not affect him.
He said: "I don't tend to read the papers or anything else like these websites people have. I think there's been quite a bit of negative stuff but that's the way football is.
"One week you're a hero, one week you're getting beat, you're a disaster. If you're big enough to take the praise you've got to be big enough to take the criticism."
Ferguson also confirmed the club are close to securing a link with Irish side Bohemians in order to operate a player exchange scheme and is keen to take his squad to Ireland during the November international break.
